Creating a Web Page on BamaEd

Anyone who has a BamaEd account can publish a web page on the Internet. There are several resources available in the College of Education computer labs for creating and editing web pages, including Gomer, Microsoft Word, and Netscape Composer. Adobe Photoshop is also available on specific machines for editing graphics.

About the HTML Editors

Gomer is a non-graphical interface editor available in the computer labs. You must have an understanding of HTML code in order to use Gomer.

Microsoft Word allows you to create an HTML page just as if you were creating a regular document. Instead of using the Save As command under the File menu, you use the Save As HTML command.

Netscape Composer is an editor which has a graphical interface like Microsoft Word, but is only a web page editor.

How to Publish Your Web Page

Once you have created your web page, you will need to save it to your network drive in the following directory:

Z:\PUBLIC.WWW

If such a directory does not exist on your Z: drive, you will need to create it. The easiest way to do this is through Windows Explorer. Under My Computer in Explorer, double click on the Z: drive, so that you are viewing all of the folders and files on your Z: drive. Under the File menu in Explorer go to New and then Folder. This will create a new folder on your Z: drive, which is untitled. You will need to name it Public.www.

Your web page will need to be named Index.htm. Gomer and Composer will automatically save your file with an HTM extension. However, Microsoft Word saves it with an HTML extension by default. Since the network does not accept long file names, you will need to type Index.htm in the File name box when you save your page. You must save locally linked pages and any graphics associated with your page to this directory as well. Most editors will automatically save graphics within a page to the same directory.

How to Access Your Web Page

If you successfully save your web page to the correct location, then you will be able to access your page over the Internet. Your address is:

www.bamaed.ua.edu/~loginID

For instance, if your name is Joseph Smith and your loginID is JSMITH, then your address would be:

www.bamaed.ua.edu/~jsmith
