 Novice teachers gain valuable, first-hand experience with students at local schools throughout their educational coursework.

 

      Schools across Alabama and the U.S. are in need of good science teachers.  Over the next 6 years science teachers will be hired for 75% of the classrooms in Alabama alone. This will be due to retirements, additional science added to the school curriculum, and a projected 15% increase in students.

 

      The task of teaching science will be difficult.  Many changes are being planned to upgrade science in our schools.  New teachers will need enhanced ability in science knowledge, innovative teaching, and expertise in using advanced technology in science classrooms and laboratories.  The University of Alabama offers a science teaching program leading to certification which is outstanding in each of these areas.  If you can meet this challenge we want you to contact us.

 

      The University of Alabama offers a wide array of degrees in science education.  The Capstone College of Education has a long history extending back to 1844.  The College is fully accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Alabama State Board of Education.  This accreditation enables those who complete science teacher education programs to be eligible for reciprocal certification agreements in most of the United States, as well as being recognized overseas for teaching in other countries.  Accepted students have a range of opportunities to fund their education as well.

 

Undergraduate Degrees in Science Teaching

 

Elementary/Early Childhood Education (K-6)

 

B.S. in Elementary/Early Childhood Education with specialization in Science Teaching and B level Teacher Certification

 

The programs in elementary science education require the completion of a minimum of 129 semester hours.  Required courses of study include:

 

 

General core studies…………………………….	39 semester hours
Professional studies……………………………..	24 semester hours
Science & science teaching……………………...	21-23 semester hours
Technology in teaching…………………………..	9 semester hours
Teaching field…………………………………...	27 semester hours
Internship……………………………………….	9-12 semester hours

 

 

Secondary Education (7-12)

 

B.S. in Secondary Science Education and B level Teacher Certification

 

Teaching Fields (majors):

 

The programs in secondary science education require the completion of a minimum of 133+/- semester hours.  Students must fulfill the requirements for two teaching fields or complete the single comprehensive science teaching field. Required courses of study include:

 

General core studies…………………………….	43-47 semester hours
Professional studies……………………………..	18 semester hours
*Science & science teaching……….……………	60-66 semester hours
Technology in teaching…………………………..	9 semester hours
Internship……………………………………….	9 semester hours

 

*27 semester hours of each of two science fields or 60 semester hours in all fields for comprehensive

Complete the UA application and return it with a check or money order for $25.00 made payable to The University of Alabama

 

Have your ACT or SAT score(s) sent to our Office of Undergraduate Admissions.  Note- our ACT code is 0052 & SAT code is 1830.

 

Have your most recent official high school transcript sent to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

 

 

 

Qualifications

 

     Entering students should have a "C" average in academic courses and an acceptable score on the ACT or SAT (GPA 2.0-ACT 22 or SAT 1030--OR-- GPA 2.5-ACT 19 or SAT 910, etc.)

 

MINIMUM High School Course Requirements:

F Four units of English and four units of social sciences, including world history or a comparable course.

F Three units of mathematics and three units of natural  science, including two courses with lab components

F One unit of foreign language

F Five additional units of academic courses
