Schools across Alabama and the U.S. are in need of good science teachers. Over the next 6 years science teachers will be hired for 75% of the classrooms in Alabama alone. This will be due to retirements, additional science added to the school  curriculum, and a projected 15% increase in students.

The task of teaching science will be difficult. Many changes are being planned to upgrade science in our schools. Teachers will have to develop new skills, learn new knowledge, manage more complex tasks, and use advanced technology well. Teachers will need new integrated science knowledge, expertise in inquiry science teaching methods, new strategies for alternative science assessment and skills in using multimedia technology, microcomputer (MBL) and calculator (CBL) based laboratories. Science classroom action research, leading to more formal qualitative and quantitative research in science teaching, is an important part of all our programs at the graduate level.

      The University of Alabama offers a wide selection of science education programs leading to graduate degrees and certification which are outstanding in four science discipline areas. University resources such as the Alabama Science Teaching and Learning Center offer opportunities for teachers to get involved with the future. Since most graduate education courses are taught in the evenings and summer, part-time enrollment is possible.

 

      The Capstone College of Education has a long history extending back to 1844.The College is fully accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Alabama State Board of Education. This accreditation enables graduates to be eligible for reciprocal certification agreements in most of the United States, as well as being recognized overseas for teaching in other countries.

 

      Accepted students have a range of opportunities to fund their education as well. Assistantships are available in teaching, supervision, and research.

Elementary and Secondary Science Education:

Doctoral Program (Ph.D. & Ed.D.) and Class AA Certification

      Programs are offered at the Doctoral level for supervisors, administrators and science teacher education faculty in colleges and universities. Doctoral students are mentored to develop research and advanced science teaching abilities.Numerous opportunities are available to develop leadership abilities at state and national levels.
