Documents Progress to Date The beginning theme "SPARKING NEW INTERESTS IN ENERGY EDUCATION" has provided the motivation and excitement for PROJECT ENERGY participants during the 1995-96 school year. Our knowledge base in energy education has been enhanced through reflective teaching practices and colleague sharing of energy concepts. Project energy teachers are now confidently equipped with knowledge for initiating model changes in science teaching (action-research) in the classrooms, improving the quality of energy education for their students and organizing teacher inservice energy workshops for other teachers. These skills were developed by their participation in three weekend workshops held at The University of Alabama and Auburn University, a week-long workshop held in Oak Ridge, TN, and, for some, experiences at the annual Alabama Science Teachers Association Conference in Birmingham in September.

The Project Energy and Energy Literacy Summer Workshop in Auburn, June 2-4, was another successful venture into furthering energy awareness across Alabama.  Fifty of our state’s top teachers from over 15 counties and 25 schools attended the three day workshop. Their participation allowed for ideas to be shared among fellow educators. Teachers were able to build a network of material and expert support from which to draw on for assistance for the coming school year.

Project Energy Newsletter 3(5)
Discusses fall outlook and next workshop, where teachers are to received Casio graphing calculators for classroom use.  Also discusses computer grants for teachers.

Project Energy Newsletter 4(1)

Discusses plans have been made for our next Project Energy/Energy Literacy workshop. Casio graphing calculators will be featured, and each participant will receive a calculator, probes, and CBL unit. In addition to offering a training session on how to use the calculators, we plan to have the participants develop learning cycles that utilize the calculators.

The February 7th workshop "Designing Energy Science Lessons with Technology" was held at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Over 30 participants attended and left with enthusiasm for trying out ideas generated in the workshop in their own classroom. Each participant received a graphing calculator, 12 programs for sensors, EA 100 interface, and temperature, light, and voltage sensors. Lessons were developed on energy topics which spanned the sciences.

June 1st and 2nd Summer Institute. The Summer Institute was another success. Teachers from all over Alabama came together to increase their energy awareness and better equip themselves for teaching Alabama’s students. Included in the institute was a very insightful presentation led by Dr. Carol Donovan on the topic: "The Language of Science." This is an important issue, and we are very grateful to Dr. Donovan for her time and efforts to improve the state of education in Alabama. You can read more about Dr. Donovan’s work in her article in this newsletter. Also featured at the workshop was training in energy curriculum materials for elementary, middle school, and high school students. These sessions proved to be very conducive to classroom group work and student involvement. Everyone enjoyed this exercise and it gave the participants a chance to be actively involved in this experience. Project Energy/Energy Literacy plans to incorporate similar activities in future workshops, so be on the look out for more great classroom resources.
