INSTRUCTIONS

These are instructions for using POWERPOINT 4.0 under Windows. The instructions are similar for the Macintosh.

DESCRIPTION: Microsoft POWERPOINT is a sophisticated presentation program that you can use to create electronic slide shows, traditional 35-mm slide shows, overheads, paper handouts, speaker notes or a combination of these.

BASIC POWERPOINT FUNCTIONS: Go to the BCT300 PowerPoint Tutorial if you are unsure of the basic PowerPoint instructions.

When you finish the BCT300 PowerPoint tutorial, press the BACK arrow icon on your Browser to come back to begin this BCT400 tutorial on the more advanced features of PowerPoint.

OUTLINES

The outline form allows you to see how the slides flow from slide to slide. You can use the outline view in two ways. The first way allows the user to create slides in an outline form. PowerPoint later converts the outline to slides. The second way allows the user to make the slides and afterwards view an outline to observe the flow of the information.

OPTION #1: CREATING IN OUTLINE VIEW

To make outlines, go to VIEW and choose OUTLINE. The following graphic depicts the screen you should see in outline form:

The TAB key allows you to indent. Notice that as you indent the size of your font changes.

Once your outline is finished you can go to VIEW and choose SLIDE, and you will see each slide you wrote in outline view.

OPTION #2: VIEWING ALREADY CREATED SLIDES IN OUTLINE VIEW

To view an outline of your slides, go to VIEW and choose OUTLINE. The following is an example of a file in outline view:

SPEAKER NOTES

As a speaker it is useful to have your notes available for quick reference. PowerPoint allows you to do this. Go to VIEW and then choose NOTE PAGES. This is the screen you should see:

Click on the notes icon and enter your notes for the current slide. You can enlarge the view box by increasing the size in the zoom box . Add notes to all your slides as necessary. This is an example of a note page:

MASTER SLIDE

You can create a title master and a slide master.

TITLE MASTER: This is the slide that holds the formatted placeholders for a title and subtitle for your presentation. If you make a change to the title master, the change affects all slides in your presentation that are based on the title master.

SLIDE MASTER: This is the slide that holds the formatted placeholders for all the titles, main text, and any background items you want to appear on all slides in a presentation. If you make a change to the slide master, the change affects all slides in your presentation based on the master.

IF you modify a master title or slide all the slides that use this master will change.

The following is an examples of a master file which will change the fonts of the slides in a presentation:

The following depicts the Slide Sorter View with some slides made using the above slide master:

UNIQUE SLIDES:These are slides that are different from the master slide. These slides retain their uniqueness even when you change the master. You can always apply a master format to slides you have altered.
