BCT 400

This is one of the few products in this class that
includes HARDCOPY products.
KNOW YOUR PRINTER AND WHAT KIND OF SUPPLIES YOUR PRINTER REQUIRES FOR THIS PROJECT.

BACKGROUND

By the point, you are all problably pretty accomplished in using the computer for various types of desktop publishing tasks. You can create word documents and print various types of materials. The purpose of this module on DESKTOP PUBLISHING is to add to your list of technology-related skills in this area.

You will be making personal business cards (worth 10 points) and shipping labels (10 points) plus you will make a hardcopy resume and then post it on the Internet using HTML (15 points).

These are very useful skills for preparing to enter the job market, too. You will have nice business cards to include in your resume and application packet. You will know how to make professional looking shipping labels to put in packets of information. You will have a professional looking resume printed as well as an online resume, which is impressive in itself!

BUSINESS CARDS

The following are instructions for the business card assignment in Microsoft Word 97' if you have Word 2000, the instructions should be similar. If you have trouble or questions, send the professor an email

** This assignment can be completed using any word processing program (If you use a different word processor, make sure to inform the professor when the product is emailed.)

As part of this assignment, you MUST use a graphic from the Internet.

These directions are for Word 97.
  • Click on the "Start" button.
  • Select "programs"
  • Locate either Microsoft Office or Microsoft Word
  • Open a new page in Microsoft Word
  • Select "tools"
  • Click on "envelopes and labels".
  • Select the "labels" tab.
  • Select the "options" button and scroll down the "product numbers" until you see "5371- BUSINESS CARDS." This is the business card stock that is required for this assignment if you are going to print these on the printers in the Graves Labs. You, as a GOALS student, will need to get the business card stock that works with your printer.

  •

  • Select the "5371-Business cards" ( or the stock that you have gotten for your own printer) and click "OK".
  • In the "address" section you will write all of the information that is required for this assignment. After the text has been added you will the click on the "new Document button".

The information you typed will now be on your Business Cards. You may need to modify some of your information in order to get it all on one card. Begin modifications for the card in the upper left side of your screen. Next, work on the card in the upper right side of the screen. Work on each card from the left to the right side, in a zigzag pattern. You may wish to make other modifications such as font, style, and graphics. Just highlight what you want to modify and use your word processing skills.

Prior to inserting your graphic, go to the internet and choose a suitable graphic for use on your Business card. Be sure that the graphic has been saved in the same directory as your business cards.

Do not use clipart!

To add a graphic, click on the screen where you want the graphic to be inserted. On the menu bar, point and click the mouse on "Insert". Select "picture", then choose "from file". This will give you a dialog box to choose your file. Change this to the drive where the image is saved and select the graphic that you have saved. Now click "OK". After you insert your graphic, you will need to "copy" it to each card.

The picture will be surrounded by eight (8) small black squares, which are called handles. You will probably want to shrink your graphic. If the graphic still has the small boxes around it, click on the square (with your left mouse button) on the bottom right corner of the graphic and move your mouse to the left. This makes your graphic smaller, but the graphic maintains the correct proportion.

If the handles are not there, click once on the graphic and follow the above instructions. You can move/place the graphic to the left, right or in the center of your business card. While the handles are around the graphic, click and HOLD the left mouse button and move the graphic where you want it to be placed.

When you are finished with shrinking and placing your graphic on the business card, click someplace off the graphic to return to the business card modification (the handle will disappear when you click someplace outside the graphic) To return to the graphic, click on it and the handles will appear.

Save your card to your A:\ floppy disk or your C:\ drive.

When you selected "buscard1" from the template, it indicated Avery 5371*. These cards have 25 sheets with 10 business cards to a sheet. They are a little more expensive than some other brands due to the Avery label and quality of the card stock. You may want to cut costs and share a box of business cards with your friends.

SOME TIPS...

**We highly encourage you to print your business cards where you have access to a color printer. This will give you the added advantage of color graphics and a more professional look.

** First, print the business cards on regular printer paper and look at the card alignment on the paper against a business card template. You should have ten cards on this page.

**For your finished product, you will need to print out your business cards. You will email the business card file to assignment mailbox (goals400@bamaed.ua.edu) .

MAIL a hardcopy to your professor, using the shipping labels that you have to make in the other part of this assignment!

We also urge you to print your cards so you can include them with your resume and other application papers when you enter the job market.

**YOU MUST GO TO PRINT PROPERTIES AND SELECT MANUAL FEED BEFORE PRINTING FOR THE COMPUTERS IN THE LAB.

RESUME: Hardcopy and HTML Versions

The following are instructions for the resume assignment in Microsoft Word 97; WORD 2000 is the same or similar.  If you have trouble, contact your professor.

There are Resume Templates in most word processors that work similarly. If you have one on your computer at home, we urge you to do this activity on your own computer. The instructions should be almost the same. Try it at home.

These directions are for Word 97.
  • Open the Microsoft Word.
  • Go to File and click on New.
  • You will then see a screen that looks like this:

  •

  • Select the "Other" tab, and click on the resume wizard.
  • Follow the on-screen directions to insert your personal information and continue to click the "next" button.

  •

NOTE: If you plan to use your resume on your home page assignment, DO NOT choose the "professional" resume, it will not convert to HTML. Also save it to another disk for later use.

You can choose any type of resume to fit your needs. Make sure you select the "entry level" radio button and when you get to the "headings" section ensure that you select the following:

  • After you have selected each Heading you can then click on the "Finish"button.

At the following screen you can start to highlight and insert your information into the document.

Make certain that you change the header LANGUAGES to TECHNICAL SKILLS
These are the computer- related skills you learned in this class or other computer classes. You are at the cutting edge of skills in Technology, so advertise yourself!

If you want to learn more about Designing a Professional Resume, go to: http://www.fhsu.edu/htmlpages/services/career/resumehd.htm

If you want to see a sample resume of a College graduate go to: http://www.homebusiness.com/support/Career/Resumes.html#College

Try to keep the resume to one or two pages because resume means brief in French! Make sure to save your resume since you will send an email to your assignment address for the course: attach your resume as a file. You might want to consider saving this to a disk for later use.

HTML VERSION of your Resume

Now that you have your  resume saved in WORD, here is a way to get it into HTML.

  • You will open the file back up in WORD and add any links, targets, graphics, etc. you want within WORD and save the file with SAVE AS HTML.
  • Now you have a documents version (.doc) and an html version (.html).
  • In the .html version, go back and put in links to your colleges and universities, links to the companies for which you have worked, links to towns where you have lived, links to your specific department.
  • Make the email addresses active links. See what we mean? Add some "interactivity" to the .html version of your resume.
  • Then you upload this to your bama account or some other ISP.
  • Send an email to the assignment address (goals400@bamaed.ua.edu) writing the internet address where the resume can be seen.

Important:

When you are saving ALL your files (sounds, webpages, images, etc.), DO NOT USE SPACES OR SYMBOLS IN YOUR FILENAMES. Get used to using lowercase letters, that way you keep consistent with all filenames. Many ISPs, including BAMA, are case sensitive, so there is a difference between uppercase and lowercase letters. If you use spaces your files will NOT come up when viewed online. A similar thing happens if the computer is trying to look for a name that has a different latter case, those files will not appear. BE CONSISTENT: NO SPACES, USE ONLY LOWERCASE.

GRADING:

Your Resume should contain the following:

Name and Address, email address
1 point
All appropriate parts included such as objective, education, experience, technical skills, references, etc.
2 points
Correct spelling
2 points
