Background

There are many different chat programs that are in use today, including Mirabilis ICQ, Microsoft NETMEETING, and YAHOO! Chat, just to name a few. ICQ (I SEEK YOU) is a very popular program for which the there is a tutorial for ICQ created by Dr. Anna C. McFadden. With any of these programs, you can communicate with a teacher, friend, parent or a group of people in real time, and the best part is that it is free! You simply go to the home page of the one you select (we are using YAHOO), register and receive a password and ID for chatting. You are then able to join chat rooms that are in progress, look for a chat room of interest to you, such as computers, sports, or music. Or you could create your own chat room and have someone meet you at a specified time.

We have selected YAHOO! Chat for this class so we will chatting on http://chat.yahoo.com.

NOTE from Dr. Price: I chat as BAMAPINK! The room will be called BCT400 under the category of Computers (...but this will mean more to you later after you go to the site.

Also using the Yahoo Chat Tutorial described below).

For this class assignment we have chosen to use YAHOO! chat. As part of your class assignment you will be required to meet at least once online with Dr. Price. You are to register on YAHOO! chat. You will then, through email, set up a time with your instructor (Dr. Price) to participate in an online chat. You can use this time to ask questions, receive advice or just learn how to use the chat service.

NOTE from Dr. Price: We do this early in the class so that you can use this if you need to "meet" electronically with your team and/or with us..

The following are the instructions for your YAHOO! Chat Assignment:

Use this tutorial to help you get started with Yahoo Chat.

You and your team need to check the Course Calendar to see when Dr. Price has openings for team chats. You will see pink blocks of time that indicate times when she is available.

When you and your team are ready and you have selected a 1/2 hour time period from the calendar, have your team leader send an email to Dr. Price to get your time slot blocked on the calendar. and arrange a time. She will set up the chat room, called 400, and confirm the time with your team leader.

BEFORE the chat, have your team leader send an email giving the following information on each team member:

  • team member name
  • team member's "chat" name on Yahoo chat
  • team member's email

THIS INFORMATION MUST BE RECEIVED AT LEAST 24 HOURS BEFORE THE CHAT TIME.

YOU HAVE TO GET ALL OF YOUR TEAM ON YAHOO CHAT with Dr. Price at the same time to meet the requirements for this product. Select a teamleader for this to help get your group organized and to confirm the time with Dr. Price by email, once you have selected from the PINK block of time showing available times for the chats.

GRADING

To receive the chat points, you will need to complete the following:

  • Log on to YAHOO! chat and create a user profile BEFORE YOU PLAN TO CHAT..
  • Experiment with the chat settings and become familiar with the program
  • Have your teamleader contact Dr. Price to schedule a time to chat , selected from the PINK blocks on time shown on the Course Calendar.
  • The team leader is to send the information above in an email to the professor.
  • The team leader will help the team set a time that is convenient for everyone and fits for Dr. Price (SEE PINK BLOCKS ON THE COURSE CALENDAR). Class time is always good as we know everyone is free then BUT.... it is hoped that you will feel free to contact Dr. Price for a chat anytime, not JUST during classtime. You can arrange a chat at night, weekends, whenever the schedules will work for all.
Your chat assignment should reflect the following:

You whole team & professor engaged in first chat in room set up by professor
    5 points
Your team leader sends a follow up email to Dr. Price confirming that all team members were present.
    5 points
    Total Possible Points
    10 points

If you need any assistance or clarification, see or send email to your professor, Dr. Price or your GTA.
