TOW "Technology on Wheels"
Bundle Instructions

READ THOROUGHLY BEFORE USING TOW!

Good Luck using this new and exciting technology -- TOW (that's Technology on Wheels) in your placement! We have written an easy to follow User’s guide plus various manuals and schematics are included in this notebook for your use.

Who do I contact with questions/ problems? Dr. Vivian Wright at 348-1401 or vwright@bamaed.ua.edu

Laptop

1.  Place laptop on solid, flat surface.
2.  Remove the Surge protector/ Power pack (These are Velcro together, DO NOT separate!).  This unit is labeled green, as is the AC plug on back of laptop. Plug AC adapter into notebook and into wall outlet.
    3.  To open computer, slide button located on top/ edge side of monitor and lift gently.
    4.  Push the power button, located in upper right corner of keyboard (above "SysRq" & "Ins" keys).
    5.  Once powered up, the first screen is a network screen. Select "Workstation Only" and Click "OK."

NOTE: Each TOW bundle has network cabling included in the pack. If you plug in the network cable, you should be able to access the Internet from your school. However, you will still need to choose "Workstation Only" because you are not accessing their local area network in this step.
    6.  You should now be at your desktop. Keep in mind that the mouse/ touch pad is very sensitive!
    7.  To use programs loaded on TOW, select "Start," "Key Applications." Here are the program groups:

Adobe: Adobe Distiller, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Photoshop
      Math: NuCalc, Geometer’s Sketchpad, Zap-A-Graph
      Network: Bamaed Dialup, Novell Login
Office 2000: Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher, Word

Also listed under "Programs" are the Netscape Communicator and Internet Explorer browsers. If you are using "Composer" as your HTML editor, make sure that you are using Netscape as your browser.

NOTE: We encourage you to use AC power instead of relying on battery power to prevent future problems. Please follow the instructions above for proper AC hook-up.

Laptop Shutdown Instructions
It is vital that you shutdown properly! 1.  Go to "Start," "Shutdown."
2.  Make sure that "Shutdown" is selected.
3.  To end your session, click "OK."
4.  Wait until your screen turns blue. Then, be sure to hold the power button down for a few seconds until you hear the laptop click off and the screen turns black. The machine will NOT shutdown automatically. You MUST follow these instructions.
5.  Close your laptop.
6.  Unplug all cables and repackage properly in TOW bundles. Make sure you have collected all the pieces and that they are returned with the TOW bundle.
Network USE

All TOW laptops have network cards (DO NOT remove). With these network cards, you should be able to access the network with a network cable (yellow) – do not confuse this with a phone cable. Phone cable is smaller and will not fit properly (see picture for size difference).

Network cable is only necessary if you want to use the Internet or local area network.

1.  To insert the network cable, push the ‘pop-up network jack’ located on the right hand side of the laptop (see picture).

    2.  Insert network cable (see picture). The other end of the cable goes into the network jack, which should be located somewhere in the room if your classroom is connected. NOTE: This looks similar to a phone jack, but is NOT a phone jack. A network cord will not fit into a phone jack. Check with your cooperating teacher to determine location/ availability of a network jack.

ZIP drive

All TOW bundles are equipped with a 100 Iomega Zip-drive. You cannot use a 250 Zip-disk with these drives. All TOW laptops already have Iomega software loaded – you do not need to load software! J

1.  Plug in the AC cord.
2.  Take the ZIP USB cable (labeled in baby blue) and insert into the right side of the computer. The flat rectangular side goes into the laptop and the square end goes into the ZIP drive (see before and after pictures).

Before:                                                                    After:

3.  NOTE: There are two USB ports on the laptop – you can use either one.
4.  When your ZIP drive is plugged in, it will automatically come up on your laptop and begin looking for the hardware. This is normal – do not panic, just wait for it to go through this process.
5.  To access your ZIP-disc, double click on "My Computer." Your Zip will be located on drive "E."
6.  Always remove your Zip-disk before turning off the Zip-drive power.
DVD/ CD-ROM player

The DVD/ CD-ROM drive is located to the left side of the laptop.

1.  To open drive, depress button. Place CD on the drive, label side up. Push drive back in.
    2.  You can access the DVD/ CD-ROM through "My Computer," located on the "D" drive. This is a multi-read CD-ROM drive, so it should be able to read all CR-R, CD-RW, and DVDs.
Projector

If you have checked out the Lightware Projector (projector is in a separate carrier) to use with your TOW bundle, follow these instructions for projector use.

1.  Unpack projector.
2.  To open lens, slide pop-up latch.
3.  Connect the power supplies. Insert the AC cord into the outlet on the projector and the other end into a power outlet. This cord has a red label. NOTE: There are two AC choices, but only the smallest one will fit into the back of the projector.
4.  Take the VGA cable and connect the 15-pin to your projector. This will go in the black RGB input connection on the projector. Insert and tighten screws on both sides.
5.  To the right, back of your laptop, there is a small door that you will open. After you open the door, you will see a blue signal output pin, located next to the green AC input.
6.  The signal output pin will only go in one direction; DO NOT force it. Screw this in tightly.
7.  Turn projector on. First turn on power at rear of projector, right above the AC input. Wait about 5 seconds for the fan to ‘come up to speed,’ then depress red "Power On/ Standby" button located on top of projector or remote. NOTE: Whatever is being projected should also be seen on your laptop monitor and vice-versa (However, this should not be a problem, because the laptops have been programmed.). If you do not see your image, you can press the Function key (green Fn key at lower left of your keyboard) in conjunction with the F3 key.  If your laptop screen image goes away, do this step a second time and it should re-appear.
8.  The "Focus" is located around the lens.
9.  To turn power off, depress red "Power" button first. Wait 5-10 minutes for projector to cool down, and then turn off power.
10.  To close lens, push down slightly and allow it to slide back into place.

NOTE: The monitor is set for 800 x 600 resolution: DO NOT CHANGE!

If you have a PowerPoint with sound, the audio will come from the laptop. You can adjust the volume by the audio controls located at the top of the keyboard. External speakers are NOT included in the TOW bundles. You need to provide your own if you want to achieve more volume.

If you want to use the projector with another source (i.e. VCR, Digital Camera, etc.), included in the pack are "Composite Video Cables," "Audio Signal Cables," and "S-Video Cables." See the enclosed Projector instruction manual for directions to use these additional cables.

If a lamp goes out, contact Dr. Wright (vwright@bamaed.ua.edu).

Microphone

All TOW bundles are equipped with a microphone so that you may record your own sound.

1.  Take microphone out of Jensen packaging (please replace in packaging when you are finished).
2.  The audio cable will insert into the third input hole on the right of your laptop. There is a picture of a microphone with sound waves to identify it.
3.  To record sound, you must go to "Start," "Programs," "Accessories," "Entertainment," "Sound Recorder."
Printers

There are two portable printers that can be checked out in addition to the TOW bundles (in separate carrier). These are in two pieces; black ink cartridges are already in the printers. If you need the color cartridge, see Dr. Wright to check it out.

1.  The printer will come in two pieces. Simply follow the photographic directions on the schematic to determine how to put it together.  Do not force the pieces, as they should slide together easily.
2.  Plug in the AC power adapter.
3.  The printer cable will plug into the parallel port behind your laptop. You will need to open the door on the left to access it. It is the only port in which it will fit. The other side of the cable connects to the only port available on the printer.
4.  Printer software is loaded on all four machines, so you should not have to worry about loading any software. (We do not advise you use your cooperating teacher’s printer, because the process is long and difficult; this is why we have included portable printers for you to check out.)
5.  Instructions for loading paper are on the paper tray.
Network Dialup

Each TOW bundle has a 56K modem to allow for dialup connections. We do not encourage that you dial into your own server.  However, we realize that you may want to do so, especially if your classroom is not connected.

1.  Right click on "My Network Places" (short-cut on desktop) and select "properties."
2.  Set your properties.
3.  Double-click on "Make New Connections."
4.  Click "Next" on the Wizard, then select "Dialup to the Internet" and click "Next."
5.  Choose third option: "I want to set up my Internet connection manually or I want to connect to LAN."
6.  Choose that you are connecting through a phone line or modem.
7.  You need the phone number of your ISP (Internet Service Provider); enter this information. Then click "Next." 8.  Please leave username and password blank because we have multiple users! Click "Next."
9.  After clicking through the next screen you may get an error message that it will not work because you have not entered a username and password. Do not panic!! Just keep clicking on "OK." (Later, you will be prompted for your username and password when you try to connect).
10.  See the additional pictures/ tutorial located in the TOW notebook. To connect, double-click.
11.  If you are not connected to the network, a small icon (computer with a red "x" on the cord) will appear next to your clock on the lower toolbar. When you are connected, this icon will disappear.
Phone Cables

There are two phone cables for each bundle: black and gray.

1.  The black cable goes from surge protector (labeled with a circle) to the telephone line.
2.  The gray cable goes from the surge protector (with the picture of a computer) to the computer.

Enjoy your clinical experience and take pride in this equipment. Return on time and with all pieces!
